Figure 3: Learning the
Power of Teamwork from Canada Geese
Accomplishing great things
as an enterprise is seldom measured in days or weeks.
The path to such achievements is often long and, even if
the course is accurately charted, it requires sustained
commitment, effort and collaboration to reach the goal.
It is unlikely that the broader organization will
exemplify and sustain this kind of cohesiveness and
commitment if their leaders are unable to model it in
their behavior. In this regard we have much to learn
from the migratory behavior of Canada geese.

Working as
a team: By flying in V-formation the flock
is able to gain 70% greater flying range that if
they were to “go it alone”. |
|
2. |
Wise
leadership: When the lead goose gets tired,
they are relieved, the power of leadership is
shared and delegated, and successors are ready
when needed. |
|
3. |
Humane
leadership: If a goose is hurt or goes to
the ground, others will go with it until gets
healthy or dies; they are there for one another. |

The Generativity
Multi-modal Team Assessment Protocol™ provides a
thorough appraisal of the cultural norms,
managerial practices, and leadership style,
which characterize current team functioning. Using the
Protocol results as a stimulus and starting point, team
members are then guided through a process of rigorous
self-examination, individually and collectively. Soon,
they are able to identify their high-priority
development themes, formulate business relevant goals and action plans for
pursuing them. |
